The advantages and disadvantages of drinking juice

We all periodically drink juices, both fresh and out of the box. In this issue we will tell you how they differ and whether they are as useful as the ubiquitous advertisement says.

Let’s start with the composition of the juice: which one is most useful? It all depends on what vitamins you really need. A glass of orange juice contains the daily rate of vitamin C, while in carrots it is about 26 percent potassium and the daily rate of vitamin A, tomato contains 11 percent iron and 20 percent potassium, and grape 10 percent selenium, essential for the human thyroid gland. The previously mentioned data is valid for juices from the package, and in freshly squeezed them even more. It will be important to note that according to the recommendations of the World Health Organization, each of us should drink at least 1 glass of juice per day or eat at least 5 different fruits.

Surprisingly, orange juice is the most popular in Europe or America, while apple juice is the most popular in Russia. We also love peach nectar and tomato juices. However, from year to year the consumption of juices in our country is increasing and at the moment the average citizen of the country drinks about 20 liters of this drink per year. But for example in America and the Netherlands, this figure is 2 times higher.

Many wonder how useful and safe juices are out of the box, compared to freshly squeezed. According to the vitamin composition, they can be about the same, because boxed is often artificially saturated, but the amount of fiber in packaged juices is much less. In addition, many buyers, chasing a low price tag, buy nectars instead of juices. They differ in their high sugar content, which is sometimes added to cheap natural juices, and in nectars it is so much that it can be dangerous for people with diabetes, the elderly and young children, not to mention overweight consumers. For example, in a glass of orange nectar there is about as much sugar as Coca-Cola. But it will be important to note the fact that packaged juices are pasteurized and do not allow the presence of harmful microorganisms that may be present in the so-called “fresh”.

And, finally, let us mention the people who are overweight, who are trying to get rid of it with a juice diet. In addition to the fact that natural juices in large quantities can lead you to gastritis, so also because of a lack of protein, you will lose not fat, but muscle mass.
